How to Install Color Pigment in DIY Epoxy Resin

Step 1: Material Preparation

As with any successful project, you need to start with preparation. Instead of preparing a surface this time, you'll be making sure you have all your materials ready and, if necessary, measured. What you'll need:

* 2+ Mixing buckets
* Stirring sticks
* Preferred color pigment solution
* Preferred resinous coating solution

Determine how much resin you’ll need to complete your layers of resin, and how much color pigment you’ll need to get the colors you want. Proportions and ratios matter here, as always! Different colors in different ratios will come up with completely different results.

As an optional replacement first step, you can mix together a smaller batch of samples. This is useful for testing out color combinations, and making sure the color will come out how you want it to. Experiment wildly! With the right color pigments, you could even emulate a stone or marble look.

Step 2: Mix the Color into Part A

The order here is incredibly important!

You must always, always mix your color pigment solutions into your Part A of any resinous coating solution, before adding in Part B. This is because Part B is your hardening agent, a.k.a the “activator.” Once the hardening process begins, color dispersion becomes significantly more unpredictable.

Use smooth, consistent stirring patterns with a wooden stirring stick and slowly introduce your color into the resin. Remember that there are many variables that affect the final appearance of your pigmented epoxy resin system. A few things to take into account:

* How many layers you’re installing
* If there’s any broadcast system you’re including
* How big the space is
* If you’re using multiple colors

Step 3: Mixing Your Resin

Once you’ve gotten your color fully dispersed, and looking how you want, you can start to mix your resin parts. Use a clean, fresh mixing bucket and stirring stick. Follow the same techniques of smooth, consistent stirs.

Your DIY resin solution’s manufacturer’s guidelines will have all the information you need regarding mixing time, proportions and ratios, temperature, etc. Consider researching all that information before you start mixing! Going in blind to a first-time resin install is a recipe for system failure.

Step 4: Install the DIY Resin

Now that your resin solution is fully mixed and ready to install, take a second to double check that it still matches the color you wanted at the beginning. Remember that it’s much harder, and much more expensive, to fix a mistake after you’ve poured than before.

If everything looks good, then all that’s left to do is install! Whether it’s for a DIY art project or for a DIY vinyl flake epoxy garage floor, we have guides for you.
